Leta 490 pr. n. št. so na vzhodni obali Atike blizu Maratona Atenci premagali desetkrat močnejšo vojsko perzijskega vladarja Darija. Vest o zmagi je v Ateno prinesel Filided, ki je pretekel 40 kilometrov, nato je od utrujenosti umrl. Po tem dogodku se imenuje najdaljša atletska disciplina, maraton.
Leta 1942 so Nemci začeli silovit napad na Stalingrad. Bitka je trajala pet mesecev, Nemci so bili poraženi. Bitka pri Stalingradu je ena od prelomnic v II. svetovni vojni.
