Cleanup efforts in the flood-affected areas continue at the start of the extended weekend. Monday the 14th of August was declared Solidarity Day and will be a work-free day for most Slovenians, except those working in the country's critical infrastructure. Checkpoints have been set up at roads leading to the most-affected areas - Črna na Koroškem, Mežica, Solčava, Mozirje and Luče – and access there will only be allowed to organized groups of volunteers. The head of Slovenia's Civil Protection, Srečko Šestan, said the aim of the measure was to ensure safety and reduce overcrowding, as the area is full of trucks, heavy machinery, a lot of water, mud and landslides.
Meanwhile donations for the flood victims continue pouring in. Public broadcaster RTV Slovenija has raised 1,1 million euros in the past two days, and the campaign is still open for donations. Citizens can donate via direct calls or SMS text messages. More info can be found at www.rtvslo.si. The humanitarian campaign is organized together with the Slovenian Red Cross and the Caritas relief organization.
