The records he has broken continue to tumble. After recently becoming only the third man to win the so-called 'Triple Crown' of the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and World Championships in the same season, he has now become the first man to win all three and the Lombardia in one season.

He attacked on the last big climb, the Sormano, with 48 km to go of the 255 km race and crossed the finish line 3 minutes and 16 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Remco Evenepoel of Belgium.

Giulio Ciccone of Italy was third, a further minute and 15 seconds back.

After completing the 255 km race from Bergamo to Como in the Lombardy region of Italy, Pogačar said that it had been less stressful to arrive at the finish line with a big lead than to be stressed and under pressure, as had been the case when he won in a sprint finish to claim victory in both the 2021 and 2022 editions of the race.

He added that, of all his victories in 2024, he was proudest of winning the World Championship road race a few weeks ago, and that the team and the atmosphere had contributed to his being happy, which is what matters the most.
