Before that, Primorska, known as the Littoral or Slovene Littoral region in English, had been under Italian rule for 20 years.

A number of events were held in the west of the country. The main one took place in the town of Vipava, where Prime Minister Robert Golob was the keynote speaker.

President Nataša Pirc Musar also made a televised address to the nation, saying that it was a day when we should remember the brave people who had fought for Slovenian territory.

She added that it was also a reminder to everyone that having a country wasn't just a matter of course but rather a legacy that had to be handled with care.
