He lost around 2 and a half minutes to his nearest rivals after the crash and dropped from 4th to 6th in the overall general classification.

Race leader Tadej Pogačar said that he was devastated that Roglič had been forced to abandon the race but that it was probably the right decision under the circumstances.

Pogačar retains the race leader's yellow jersey after finishing 9th in today's stage from Aren to Pau. The stage was won by Belgium's Jasper Philipsen in a chaotic sprint finish. It's his second stage win of the week. A number of riders, including Luka Mezgec, crashed within the final kilometre.

The race heads into the Pyrenees this weekend for two tough mountain stages, which will include famous climbs such as the Col du Tourmalet and the Col de Portet d'Aspet, before a rest day on Monday.
