The substance, created by phytoplankton, contains various organic and inorganic particles and poses no direct health threat to swimmers but exposure is discouraged due to potential pathogens. This phenomenon, not uncommon but last observed in the northern Adriatic in 2018, has also affected the entire Gulf of Trieste and broader northern Adriatic region.
