More than a third of Slovenian voters went to the polls to elect mayors and councillors of the country's 212 municipalities. 157 municipalities got mayors in the first round.

In capital Ljubljana, Zoran Jankovič predictably won re-election, winning his fourth term as mayor.

In Slovenia's second biggest city Maribor, the incumbent Andrej Fištravec was predictably swept out of office. In the second round, voters will pick between businessman Saša Arsenovič and former mayor Franc Kangler.

The biggest election surprise was the coastal city of Koper, where incumbent Boris Popovič will have to enter a run-off for the first time since 2002.

The non-parliamentary People's Party remains the party with the largest number of mayors.
