Close to 40,000 teachers and other school staff are on strike today.
Due to the strike, schools and kindergartens will be closed but day care will be organised for the youngest children whose parents have nowhere else to take them.
Teachers voted overwhelmingly in favour of the strike. They have eight demands, the most important of which they say is signing a deal with the government to get paid for extra work and exposure to covid during the epidemic. They also want higher wages for all staff working in education.
Education Minister Simona Kustec criticized the strike, saying it wasn't the right thing to do.
Teachers will meet next Monday to decide their next steps.
