By comparison, summer holidays in Denmark, the Netherlands, some Swiss cantons and certain states in Germany last a maximum of 6 weeks, while the longest holidays are enjoyed by schoolchildren in most parts of Italy, Latvia and Malta.

In those countries, school is out for 13 weeks.

Many activites, workshops and camps are organised here in Slovenia during the summer months, especially by organisations such as ZPM (the Association of Friends of Youth) in Ljubljana and Maribor, and by the Mladi zmaji (Young Dragons) public organisation, which offers holiday programmes at Ljubljana Zoo for children between the ages of 6 and 10.

Some changes are on the way for the next academic year, including the mandatory learning of a foreign language for 1st graders.
