Today is World Bee Day. This is the fifth year now that the world marks the bee day - established by the UN in 2017 after a Slovenian initiative to raise awareness about the importance of honey bees. World Bee Day is celebrated on the 20th of May to remember the day in 1734 when Slovenian Anton Janša, the pioneer of modern beekeeping, was born.
A number of events will be held to mark World Bee Day, including an awards ceremony to give out Slovenia's top international award for outstanding achievement in beekeeping: the Golden Bee Prize.
