The wildfire in the Karst region is threatening settlements again and the villages of Opatje Selo, Nova Vas and Hudi Log, as well Vrtoče which is near Nova Gorica, have been evacuated. Evacuations are also underway in Merljaki, Martinuči, Žigoni, Vinišče, Mohorini and Oševljek.
Around 500 residents have been evacuated so far today.
Firefighters say the situation is critical as the wind changed direction again. Around 1,000 firefighters are battling the wildfire, which has already destroyed more than 2,000 hectares of land.
Prime Minister Robert Golob has promised financial compensation for the voluntary firefighters. Defence Minister Marjan Šarec is in the Karst region for a third day running. Two Slovenian helicopters are engaged in today’s efforts along with helicopters from Slovakia, Austria and two from Serbia.
