Information Days 2025

High schools and faculties around the country held their annual open doors days for future students. In the next school year Slovenia's high school will have 26.008 openings. US foreign aid contractors have started firing staff and thousands of people have been sent home as US President Trump decides to overhaul the country's foreign assistance programs – most notably USAID. Jane Coyle

Jane Coyle is an award-winning writer, arts journalist and critic, who has worked across print and broadcast media platforms in the UK, Ireland and Europe. Jane has written three feature-length screenplays and five stage plays and is co-librettist for the opera adaptation of her play The Suitcase. The suitcase became her inspiration for the Farm Girl monologue which tells the story of a girl growing up during WW2 and the horrors of the concentration camps. A monologue which she has performed around much of Europe and Great Britain. This performance was made here in Ljubliana and was arranged by the British Embassy.

New boycott of shops in Croatia, similar calls in Slovenia

After the success of last week's first shop boycott in Croatia, our southern neighbors are mass boycotting stores again today. A boycott of stores due to high prices was also announced in Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia. Calls for a boycott have also been made in Slovenia and Montenegro.

Eighty years since Auschwitz liberation

Ceremonies took place to mark 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Survivors said such human catastrophes must never happen again. Around 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were killed at the camp during WWII by Nazi German forces. Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Red Army on the 27th of January 1945. Donald Trump sworn is as 47th US president

On Monday, the US got its 47th president. Donald Trump, 78, was sworn in for the second time. His inauguration was moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to freezing temperatures — the first time that has happened in 40 years. In his address to the nation, Trump promised a new ''golden age'' for America and signed a blitz of executive orders from behind his desk in the Oval Office.

Tik Tok has stopped working in the US. The US banned the Chinese social media network from operating in the US citing security issues. Tik Tok has around 170 million users in the US. Photo: EPA

Spain to impose 100% tax for non-EU resident properties

Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez announced 12 measures to improve access to housing in the country. The government plans to limit the purchase of homes by non-resident foreigners from outside the EU by increasing the tax burden up to 100%.

Minors sustain serious lifelong injuries from pyrotechnics

Three minors sustained serious lifelong injuries after the use pyrotechnics during the New Year holidays. Two of them lost an arm while one sustained severe head injuries and will most likely lose sight in one eye. The police recorded a total of 120 violations during the holiday period and seized just over 6,000 illegal pyrotechnic devices. Photo: Shutterstock

Calls for cancer warnings on alcohol in US

United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy released a new Surgeon General’s Advisory on Alcohol and Cancer Risk on Friday, outlining the direct link between alcohol consumption and increased cancer risk. He said that alcoholic drinks should therefore carry cancer risk warning labels. The decision to update labels will ultimately be made by Congress.

His last name and his boyish looks have inspired countless posts online. It's no secret that many Americans are frustrated with their health care system.

Doctoral student stumbles upon lost Mayan city

Imagine using Google search and accidentally coming across the newly discovered second most densely populated city in the Mayan empire, right after Calakmul, just like that, without even walking into the jungle. Tulane University doctoral student Luke Auld-Thomas stumbled upon Valeriana when he was on page 16 of Google search and found a laser survey done by a Mexican organization for environmental monitoring, who obviously completely missed it.

28th Ljubljana Marathon gets two new records

Slovenia's capital hosted 28th LJUBLJANA MARATHON over the weekend, featuring more than 21,000 participants. Over a third of the runners came from abroad. Two new records were broken, women's and Slovenian. The oldest runner was 87-year old Slovenian.
