The snow, ice, and freezing temperatures overwhelmed emergency rooms with patients this past weekend. Patients were treated around the clock for fractured hips, ankles, elbows, wrists and spines. At the UKC Ljubljana hospital 20 patients underwent surgery during the weekend, and another 60 were still waiting for one. Doctors say it was an »extraordinary weekend«, and are calling on people, especially the elderly, to stay at home while the icy slippery conditions persist. Doctors say efforts are under way to increase medical teams and secure more operating rooms, despite doctors and dentists being on strike since January 15th.
