It will be enforced at 14 designated checkpoints. 12 of these checkpoints are on the Croatian border, and 2 are on the Hungarian border.
For international road travelers, there are 12 specified border crossings between Slovenia and Croatia, including Sečovlje, Dragonja, Sočerga, Starod, Jelšane, Petrina, Metlika, Obrežje, Dobovec, Gruškovje, Zavrč, and Petišovci. Additionally, for international road traffic between Slovenia and Hungary, two checkpoints are designated: Dolga vas and Pince.
Travelers with the right to free movement under EU law can also cross the border at 18 other checkpoints, where there won't be a continuous police presence. In the case of the Croatian border, these additional crossings include Podgorje, Babno Polje, Vinica, Slovenska vas, Rigonce, Orešje, Bistrica ob Sotli, Imeno, Rogatec, Ormož, Središče ob Dravi, and Gibina. On the Hungarian border, these checkpoints include Prosenjakovci, Hodoš, Kobilje, Čepinci, Martinje, and the old border crossing Pince.
This decision follows Italy's announcement of similar border checks with Slovenia, set to take effect in the afternoon. The heightened security measures are in response to concerns related to organized crime and escalating tensions in the Middle East. Currently, nine EU member states have implemented controls at their internal borders.
