He won the 4th and final stage in a mountaintop sprint finish, ahead of Britain's Simon Yates and Aleksandr Vlasov of Russia.

Roglič also took the overall title from Vlasov by 39 seconds, with Yates in 3rd place in the general classification.

This year's final 'Grand Tour' promises to be an exciting one, with defending champion and recently-crowned World Champion Remco Evenepoel of Belgium and 2-time defending Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark seen as Roglič's main challengers for the title.

Wales' Geraint Thomas will also compete with Roglič for the podium places in only his second ever Vuelta a Espana. He held the leader's pink jersey for most of the Giro d'Italia earlier this year before being pipped to the title by Roglič in a dramatic final individual time trial up to Monte Lussari, known in Slovenian as Svete Višarje, just over the border from Slovenia.

Jumbo Visma will become the first team to make a clean sweep of all three grand tours in one season if either Roglič or Vingegaard takes victory in the Vuelta.

The Dane could also become the first rider since Chris Froome to do a Tour de France-Vuelta a Espana double in the same year. Froome achieved the feat in 2017.
