According to the Defence Ministry, the future of the EU's anti-migrant-smuggling operation in the Mediterranean, is not in jeopardy after Germany suspended its naval contribution.

Meanwhile, Italy insists on not taking in more people rescued at sea unless the rules of redistributon change, and other member states accept their fair share of migrants.

A total of 26 EU members states are currently participating in the Sophia operation.
