The Department of Natural Disasters at the Anton Melik Geographical Institute in Ljubljana, which is part of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences, has developed a unique online digital atlas providing data on natural disasters in the country dating back to the 14th century.

The UN is launching a new flash appeal for humanitarian aid today for Palestinians. It hopes to raise 1.2 billion US dollars to help both Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. The figure is a huge increase from the previous appeal it made in October, but the UN says it reflects the "increasingly desperate" situation on the ground. Last month the EU said it would review the protection status of wolves. The EU Commission said the return of the wolf in Europe poses a "real danger" to livestock, tourism, and human life. Austria, Belgium, The Czech Republic, France, Germany and Italy are among the EU member states that have seen a dramatic increase in the number of livestock killed by wolves. Nobel Prizes were given out last week by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The Nobel prizes have been given out since 1901. It originally included five prizes: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace. A sixth prize for achievements in the field of Economics was included in 1969.
On Monday, the 26th Festival of Slovenian Film kicked off in Portorož. It will feature 55 films in the competition section and four world premieres.
Germany announced it would introduce border patrols along its borders with Poland and the Czech Republic, due to a rise in migrant crossing. The news comes as debates about the functioning of the Schengen border-free area reignite. Austria already has checkpoints at its borders with Slovenia and Hungary.
