Debitantski album z naslovom The Velvet Underground & Nico, ki je izšel leta 1967, se je na najvišjem mestu lestvice znašel pred favoriti Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band (The Beatles) in The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (David Bowie). V javnosti krožijo govorice, da je le redkokdo kupil prvenec skupine Velvet Underground, a je večina tistih, ki ga imajo, ustanovila svojo lastno skupino.
