The first Miners' Marathon has been organized in Zasavje. The course leads partly above ground and partly below ground, through the mine shafts.
103 runners from all parts of Slovenia started in Zagorje and ran the distance of 10 or 21 kilometres. They ran through Slačnik to Trbovlje, truned towards the Trbovlje cement factory, and before the bridge over the Sava river took the industrial road. After passing two tunnels on the river's left bank they reached the Trbovlje Power Sation, and entered the mine pit called Savski rov.
The runners ran more than five kilometres below ground, before reaching the finish line in Hrastnik. The 21k runners had to complete another round through the surface of the mine between Hrastnik and Trbovlje, and at Ajnzer at Trbovlje again enter the pit and run the 5 kilometres through the mine towards the finish line in Hrastnik.
This part of the pit will be kept open
At the finish miners' stew helped the runners regain their strength, and they had the occasion to meet the mine dwarf Perkmandeljc. A number of exhibitors presented their offer at the showground. The mayor of Trbovlje Jasna Gabrič greeted the audience: "It is a good thing that the events combining recreation and preservation of mining inheritance are being upgraded and expanded."
Janez Žlak, the Director of the Rudnik Trbovlje-Hrastnik mine (RTH) was among the spectators of the Miner's Marathon. He believes the Miners' Marathon is an excellent idea for Zasavje. "The part of the pit through which the course ran is not planned for closing. We intend to turn it into a museum for visitors and excursions, so now I can say that the RTH mine is in favour of preserving the course of the run," he added.
Things are different in pits
Twice a year Jamatlon, an adrenaline obstacle course through the pits, is organized in Zasavje.
