Eleven people had to be evacuated over several balconies due to thick smoke. Seven people have been taken to hospital due to smoke inhalation. Three babies were among the rescued. They are kept under observation at the University Medical Center in Maribor.

Police and firefighters have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire. According to unofficial information, the flat that was destroyed in the fire, belonged to a 26 year-old drug addict who fell asleep with a lit cigarette.
