The Slovenian Environmental Agency, judging by the even older records from neighbouring countries, claims with much certainty that 2014 was the warmest on record, at least since the end of the 18th century.
The first three months up to 4 degrees warmer
Last year started with unusually warm weather. The first three months were amongst the warmest since record-keeping began. They were up to four degrees warmer compared to the long-term average.
There were no heat waves
April was also considerably warmer and was followed by moderate temperatures all until September. The Environmental Agency didn't register any strong heat waves in that period. Compared to previous years, last year's meteorological summer was chillier, but still within the normal limits of the 30-year reference period. In most of Slovenia October and December, and even more so November, were considerably warmer than the annual average.
21 of the warmest years in the last 21 years
These record values are partly a consequence of global warming and the natural changeability of the weather conditions in that year. During the 1961–2014 period, all of the warmest years were recorded in the past 21 years, which is in accordance with the temperature increase in the last thirty years. And as the rise in temperatures continues, the Environmental Agency expects to register new annual record values in the next ten to twenty years.
