A referendum on Slovenia’s independence was held on December 23, 1990. It was called on December 7, after 203 MPs voted in favour of holding a referendum. No-one voted against while 4 MPs abstained from voting. On December 6, 11 parties signed an agreement to run on a joint ticket in the referendum.
The referendum took place on December 23, and voter turnout was 93.2 percent. 95 percent of those who turned out voted in favour of Slovenia’s independence. By 10 p.m., it was clear that an overwhelming majority of voters backed independence, but the official result was declared on December 26.
Today also marks 24 years since Slovenia’s constitution was passed. Constitution Day, a non-bank-holiday, has been observed since 1997.
