In Slovenia 100 people between the ages of 33 and 44 die every year because of smoking. Between the ages of 45 and 59, the number of people that die every year is 800. The majority of adult smokers begin smoking before the age of 18 and smoking becomes a habit before the age of 25. Practically no one begins to smoke after the age of 25. An indicative fact is that 40 percent of young people aged 15 have already smoked.

"We openly started talking about a free-tobacco society in 2013. At one of the meetings of the World Health Organization, many countries said they would strive to achieve a free-tobacco society. That doesn't mean a society completely without tobacco, but a society in which only less than 5% of the population smokes. I believe that Slovenia is capable of achieving such a goal and that it will achieve it in the future," said Marijan Ivanuša from the Slovenian office of the World Health Organization
