The National Assembly is having yet another discussion on the topic of migrant problem. The MPs are discussing the draft of recommendations regarding the migrant crisis, and measures for its containment, tabled by the SDS Party's parliamentary group.
Although migrants stopped entering Slovenia in mass, the largest opposition party is convinced that Slovenia should close the door even more, and implement stricter asylum policy.
Presently there are 369 migrants in Slovenia. This year more than 500 migrants requested international protection, but until now our country granted refugee status to 25 applicants only. Most of the asylum procedures have been stopped because migrants had left Slovenia. It results that our country remains unattractive for refugees. In spite of that the SDS Party’s MPs are convinced that the government should follow the example of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland, and start implementing stricter policy at admitting asylum seekers.
The analyst Igor Pribac warns that should Slovenia join that group of countries, it would in fact become a part of the East-European nationalistic anti-refugee identity. The Balkan refugee route has been closed for some time now. Therefore Pribac considers that the purpose of numerous parliamentary sessions with refugee crisis as their topic is mostly to gather political points.
The SDS Party is of the opinion that the government should be better prepared for the possible increase of illegal border crossings. Yet the trend remains stable, according to the Police. In May they processed 22 illegal border crossings, and no essential increase is expected in future.
