Last year, the Financial Administration (FURS) began to control illegal renting, and has assessed the campaign as very successful.
This year, the FURS conducted 450 controls, of which - as explained by Stojan Glavač - 227 violators were sanctioned and 427 fines were imposed, since one individual violator may have committed several offences.
"This year, we imposed fines with the total value of 237,000 euros. Taxpayers reported revenues of EUR 2.7 million for this purpose, while the tax being paid amounted to 230,000 euros," Glavač said. FURS intends to tighten the controls even further.
More recently, the list of countries that have banned or restricted Airbnb's operation everywhere or in some cities is increasing. Due to rising rental prices, the local population is generally not very supportive of Airbnb. Professor Sara Dolničar, from the University of Queensland in Australia sees its potential where there is a lack of classic accommodation.
The government is responsible for determining whether the presence of Airbnb in several destinations brings more advantages or disadvantages and, on the basis of this, taking further measures, Dolničar explained.
