The Monday afternoon in Ljubljana was dedicated to the anniversary of the former European and Yugoslav giant, and the synonym of the Slovenian basketball. The time of the meeting was rather unsuitable for the 70th birthday of the famous club, but Olimpija has little say in that, as the league is now led by others, and the wishes of – mostly Slovenian – clubs are being ignored. Crvena zvezda disregarded Olimpija's jubilee, and justified its role as a favourite by winning with 75:69. But even had Olimpija won, the victory would not bring much satisfaction, as a lot was missing. The number of spectators in Stožice was again far from enviable, and from 4,500 spectators the fans cheering for the visiting team were the loudest. The Olimpija players were dressed in retro sport uniforms in white-green-orange colours made especially for this occasion, which awakened nostalgic feelings.
Only Zvezda with more Yugoslav titles
A number of unforgettable Olimpija basketball players from the past gathered next to the court, also some of those who wore the green-white sport uniform for a short time only, but unfortunately a number of former players were missing. During the recess Olimpija invited its former players to the centre of the court, and gave them presents, starting with the greatest of all Ivo Daneu, and the most successful trainer Zmago Sagadin. Yet many famous names were absent. From the team which won the title of the world champions only Ivo Daneu and Aljoša Žorga were present. Krešo Ćosić died, Jure Zdovc had other obligations, Vinko Jelovac was absent, and so was Peter Vilfan; the latter being a regular at Stožice, but found the invitation and the ceremony inappropriate. Dušan Hauptman, the long-time captain of the team, was missing as well. But both players whose jerseys are displayed next to the standards with the greatest laurels won by the club which are hanging from the ceiling of the hall did attend the ceremony - Daneu and Marko Milić. Without any doubt some more names should be added to the display, and that should be done as soon as possible.
