The network brings together locations which are developing tourism on the basis of mountaineering tradition, without large tourist infrastructures and with a permanent approach.
Mountaineering Villages – as the name suggests, these locations are nestled in the heart of mountains; small, tranquil villages that have retained intimacy, a living mountaineering activity and their cultural tradition. At a celebration, Irena Majcen, Minister of the environment and spatial planning, said that Mountaineering Villages are examples of a successful transfer of good practices. At a celebration marking the joining of the municipality in the Mountaineering Village network, Majcen stressed that the first Slovene municipality to join the family of mountaineering villages was encouraged by experiences of soft, hiking-oriented tourism, as well as by experiences of nature and landscape, which were initiated in Austria – experiences which do not change the environment through large infrastructures, yet offer opportunities to local communities for income and survival in the mountainous region.
