Public buildings in Črnomelj are now covered with foil, which was also supplied by Croatian firefighters. The severe storm with hail descended upon the western part of the municipality of Črnomelj and part of the municipality of Semič. In Črnomelj, thick hail, up to the size of a tennis ball, damaged many roofs of residential houses, factories, schools, kindergartens, health and cultural centres as well as other public buildings in 15 minutes. Together with the surrounding settlements, about 400 buildings were damaged. New roofs were also damaged, although they should have withstood the hail.
The second storm wave flooded the primary school in Vinica and also caused enormous damage to cars and agriculture. Črnomelj Fire Brigade Commander Jože Vrščaj said that roof repairs will take place over several days.
Colleagues from Semič and Metlika came to the aid of Črnomelj firefighters, and protective foil was also delivered to them by colleagues from Kočevje and border regions of Croatia. The resulting damage is huge, estimates for public buildings will be issued mid next week.
