Last year Nick Cave really got her doll, when she was at his concert in Ljubljana, and Magnifico recorded a video for the song Cici Mici. Tina Renko is as an unemployed educated humanist, who, after a sewing workshop, became a true doll designer.
She lives and works in Prem in Ilirska Bistrica. She was a sociology and art history professor, who could not get a job. Four years ago she attended her friend’s sewing workshop. By the end of the year, Mimmes – dolls owned by every child from the eighties, were born. Those dolls had large heads with messy hair and soft limbs.
Tina began to sew dolls, which were inspired by her childhood toy and they were followed by some animals. She does not count her orders and she works every day. When I asked her about her schedule, she said she tries to do as much as possible in the morning, because "this is when I have the most energy".
After she carefully examines her "victim", she sketches it on a paper, makes a selection of the fabric, tailors, draws templets and cuts it with a laser. Igor Vidmar, Milan Fras (Laibach), Tadej Košir (Muff), Billy Idol, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Questlove, John Lennon, Patti Smith, and even Tina Renko also came to life in Ilirska Bistrica.
