Slovenia's Anamarija Lampič pulled off a surprise win at Friday’s cross-country World Cup event in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The 21-year-old finished tenth in the qualifying round, came in second in her group in the quarterfinal round, and won both the semi-final and the final.
“I’m really happy, I still can’t believe it. I had good skis today. I looked back before I crossed the finish line, and I saw that there’s no-one behind me,” said a smiling Lampič.
Had enough time to look back
Lampič executed an excellent game plan. She had a slow start, but then proceeded to attack from behind. She even had enough time to look back before crossing the finish line – and saw that she had a healthy lead over the rest of the field. Silje Øyre Slind from Norway finished second (+1.60), while US American Ida Sargent came in third (+1.79). Slovenian Katja Višnar placed sixth.
Alenka Čebašek was eliminated in the quarterfinal round. Only 36 competitors took part in the event.
