Author of books for children and adults was known to be master of verse and style.

In 1953, Kovič alongside Tone Pavček, Janez Menart and Ciril Zlobec published a joint collection of poems, entitled "Pesmi štirih" (Four Poets).
For many years, Kovič worked as a journalist and editor. He was the winner of many awards, including the Prešeren prize for artistic achievement.
