Despite high temperatures some places in the mountains still have frozen snow and crossing such paths is very dangerous. The head of the mountain police unit says that people can get a false sense of security, while still in the valley, due to seemingly dry mountain tops. He says that crossing a snow covered cleft, that is only 5m deep, can indeed prove to be fatal.
He further explains that this is why hikers who climb mountains and take paths on the northern side where there is less sun, should have an ice ax and climbing irons with them.
Renowned climber and hiker Klemen Premrl also advises people to plan well ahead. He says that the analysis of accidents in the mountains shows that many tragedies could have been prevented, if hikers had adhered to basic rules of mountain climbing.
Doctor Urška Bricelj advises people to provide first aid to victims before help arrives, because it's of crucial importance to help a person in need as soon as possible. That increases the person's chance of survival.
