The railway which has already entered the UNESCO's waiting list, being a part of the Walk of Peace from the Alps to the Adriatic project, is gaining importance for the development of tourism in the Gorenjska and Primorska regions.
The Bohinj railway is outstanding for its course and its technical characteristics, to mention just the Bohinj tunnel, and the longest stone railway bridge in the world over the river Soča near Solkan. 28 tunnels, 65 bridges and five galleries have been preserved until this day.
"15,000 workers participated in building this railway, this section from Jesenice to Trieste. The work was done surprisingly fast, especially when compared with the present time and the modern machines available today. The railway was finished in less than three years, with the exception of the Bohinj tunnel; they had started boring the tunnel earlier, and the work had lasted approximately five years," Matjaž Marušič, a member of the Initiative 110 years of Bohinj railway, explained.
Great interest in Auto Train
The Bohinj railway is still active. This month on weekends an auto train is connecting Bohinjska Bistrica and Nova Gorica, for the first time ever. The interest in auto train with a special carriage for bicycles is growing. The municipalities along the Bohinj railway, supporting the project Park and enjoy nature, are pleased with the progress.
Klemen Langus, the director of the Bohinj tourism, added: "This is the possibility to attract guests mostly from Gorica, Nova Gorica, and it is a step forward in our endeavours for sustainable mobility." In the beginning of September a celebration of the 110th anniversary of the Bohinj railway is planned in Solkan.
