Slovenia’s Prime Minister Miro Cerar said that the Brussels terrorist attacks have no direct impact on the security situation in Slovenia. However, he added that the relevant authorities remain on alert.
According to police commissioner Marjan Fank, Slovenian police had already stepped up security measures after the Paris terrorist attacks. Police have now been instructed to additionally beef up security - primarily at airports and border crossings. Fank stressed that certain groups in the country will be monitored more closely.
Police will keep a close eye on crowded areas and public events. According to Fank, these guidelines were already published a few months ago.
“No such thing as absolute security”
Fank said that Slovenian police are fully prepared to handle terrorist threats, but he noted that there is no such thing as absolute security. He said that Belgium was put on the second highest level of alert and police presence on the streets was strong, but that did not prevent the attacks from happening.
Interior Minister Vesna Györkös Žnidar said in a press release issued after the Brussels attacks that Slovenian police are keeping a close eye on the security situation in the country.
