The head of the Kočevje Health Centre, Andreja Rako, explained the purchase of the bulletproof vests. She said they would not be worn by all doctors and paramedics, but only by those responding to "risky" emergency calls where firearms and other weapons have already been used or could be used.
The bulletproof vests are an additional preventive measure, as police officers normally accompany paramedics engaged in risky emergency interventions. Rako said they decided for the move at the proposal of the paramedics themselves. According to Rako paramedics in the Kočevje region have been threatened with armed weapons many times.
Andreja Rako informs that other emergency services in the region of Prekmurje and elsewhere have also decided to take similar measure and purchase bulletproof vests.
