He said for RTV Slovenija that "the last ignominious record caused by Croatia is almost 13,000 refugees in one day". "No other country, from Greece towards north, has ever been entered by such a number of refugees in a day – as if almost half a million people entered Germany in one day." The cooperation with Austria on the other side of the country, which has been also carrying a great burden due to the refugee crisis, is very good, Prime Minister explained.
He admitted the possibility of erecting a fence along the border with Croatia exists, but first we should try to find a joint European solution to the problem.
They exchanged messages with the Croatian PM Zoran Milanovič. Cerar said his message was very short, informing the Croatian PM that their actions were totally irresponsible and might have severe consequences were Croatia to continue with such actions. They should refrain from intentional dispersing of refugees and stop directing them into rivers instead of treating them humanely, in coordination with our side, which would allow us to receive them and transfer them into centres, and send them forward. To make the long story short, their actions are non-European, and dangerous, as it might cause conflicts, Cerar believes.
The commissioner Avramopulos was here as well, and everybody can see that Croatia is behaving in non-European manner. Hopefully at the Sunday conference of the government representatives - called on our initiative by Juncker - it will become clear that a solution must be found in order to prevent similar actions in future.
Cerar added that the government actions were proportionate to the situation. Before the actual arrival of refugees we could only get ready, and wait. When they came, the pressure increased proportionately with the increasing number of refugees. It should be mentioned that we are a country of two million inhabitants, the smallest on the refugee route.
