Cerar said he understands that border controls are a nuisance for travellers, but he underscored that Slovenia was part of the international community and, as such, had to honour its commitments. "Slovenia must secure its Schengen border; otherwise, we run the risk of being kicked out of the Schengen area," he said, adding that Slovenia must ensure the security of its citizens as well as protect the entire Schengen area.
"As guardians of the Schengen border we're obliged to protect it. Slovenia expects the same from Croatia once it joins the Schengen area," said Cerar.
Cerar stressed that Slovenia will strive to improve traffic flow while maximizing border security. On Wednesday, Slovenia sent a note to the European Commission saying that it wants to abandon systematic checks of all passengers before the start of the Easter holidays.
Cerar also said that Croatia needs to turn to all the Heads of EU member states – rather than just Slovenia – if it wants the EU to change its border regulations.
