The part of the road along the coast, i.e. Parenzana, will be reserved for pedestrians only. Immediately after the closure of the road, one lane will be turned into a bicycle lane, and one into an intervention route. The use of the bicycle lane will be allowed also to other vehicles with speed below 25 km/h.
According to local authorities, the closure of the coastal road opens new possibilities for development of this part of the Slovenian coast, which will be from now on dedicated mostly to recreation and socializing, and will become a green oasis connecting the towns of Izola and Koper.
The closure of the coastal road for motorized traffic, i.e. cars and busses had been announced long time ago. It was made possible last year by adoption of an amendment to the act governing highways and tolls, which gave the municipalities of Izola and Koper legal grounds for realizing their plan.
