The bicycle trails had already been built both in Croatia and in Austria, where the Drava cycling trail has been in operation for more than twenty years, and in recent years the trails are also starting to be well-constructed in Slovenia, too.
Roads along the Drava River in Slovenia were quite inhospitable towards cyclists until recently. In Austria, the Drava Biking Trail attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually, which is why – following the example of the Austrians – the Slovenian government and local communities have already been working on proper trail construction and have launched several infrastructure projects. Now it's time to connect, because this is the only way to develop all tourist potential of the Drava River, says project leader Uroš Rozman.
The Maribor - Pohorje Tourist Board is responsible for the promotion and marketing of the adventures along and on the Drava River under a common brand name. We can only achieve a breakthrough with joint performance, says Paco Wrolich from the Austrian Carinthian Tourist Organization, where bicycle tourism is already ranked third in importance. Bicycle tourists usually stay for a week or more, and for many, the Drava Biking Trail in Carinthia is already too short.
Authors of the project will endeavor to establish 150 kilometres of organized and safe cycling routes along the Drava River between the Austrian and Croatian border, which would offer a ride through unspoiled nature, visits to tourist attractions and bicycle-friendly catering.
