All the candidates are to be officially known 15 days before the vote, when the deadline for putting forward candidacies for the four-year mandate expires. Presidential candidates can be proposed by individual intermunicipal football associations or at least 20 clubs, which have been active in football for at least three years.
A total of 30 delegates will have the right to vote at the assembly. In order to win a candidate has to receive more than half of the votes. Votes will be cast through a secret ballot. If none of the candidates receives more than half of the votes, a second round vote will be held between the two candidates which received the most votes.
Unofficially McDowell Zor a serious candidate
So who are the potential candidates ready to succeed Čeferin? TV Slovenija reports that former football referee David McDowell Zor, close to the president of the Slovenian referees association Vladimir Šajn, is seriously considering putting forward his candidacy. McDowell Zor is currently a member of the Referees Committee at the NZS and also vice-president of the association of football referees in Ljubljana. He is also a match delegate.
Mentioned as a presidential candidate is also the head of the Court of Audit, Tomaž Vesel, he took over an important seat at the international football governing body FIFA at the beginning of July. FIFA named him acting chairperson of the Audit and Compliance Committee, with a mandate until the next FIFA congress in May 2017.
Among the candidates also Janković and Olaj?
There are rumours that the highest position in Slovenian football is also being offered to the former head of the Slovenian Handball Federation and current Ljubljana Mayor Zoran Janković. Back in 2011 one of the favourites for new NZS president was also Drago Kos, however the native of Koroška later decided to withdraw his candidacy. Coming from the ranks of businessmen is the head of the Duol company from Brezovica near Ljubljana, Dušan Olaj, who is reportedly also interested in the position. The company is internationally recognized for its air domes, mostly used as sports facilities, but also as warehouses and greenhouses for growing vegetables. For many years Olaj was also a member of the executive board at the NK Olimpija Ljubljana football club. He is currently a member of the executive board of the Slovenian Athletics Federation.
