Statistics indicate that the majority of mountaineering-related accidents involve slips. People usually do not move around as they should, and they use their equipment improperly. The next leading cause is avalanches. Rescuers have warned that this year's winter is exceptional: There is a lot of snow in the mountains, but strong winds caused it to drift.
As a result, the snow is heaped into large drifts and many rocks are covered in ice, which can pose a danger to mountaineers. Fresh snow forecast for the next few days is expected to increase the risk of avalanches. All those who want to hit the mountains in the following days or weeks need to take extra precautions and look out for avalanches.
