The crossing of the border with Italy is thus possible only with a valid identity card, or a passport.
Since this the morning the Italian Police, Carabinieri, financial guards and soldiers have been stopping drivers on main roads and railway lines, occasionally also on less travelled roads and even agricultural border crossings between Italy and Slovenia, both entering and leaving the country, Mirjam Muženič reported for Radio Slovenija.
Due to the extraordinary safety situation, the protection of the 219 kilometres of the border between the two states was enhanced by additional personnel from Rome. 35 soldiers arrived to Trieste to help shorten the waiting periods at the border. The representative of the government Ana Paola Porzio explained: "We will do everything possible to prevent queues at the border crossings. The security authorities will assure calm crossings for everybody. We only suggest the drivers to choose less busy traffic routes, and avoid rush hours. We would really like to avoid problems due to long waiting periods and queues."
