The elections will take place on November 18 in all 212 municipalities. The voters will elect the new majors and local councils for the new four-year mandate. The local councils, town councils and home district councils are also being elected in municipalities below the level.
In municipalities, where no candidate obtains the majority of the votes, the second round will take place on December 2.
Election duties after the holidays
Tonin determined with the act, that election duties start on September 3. He explained how he believes it's important for election duties to start after the holidays because the first days are extremely difficult when it comes to logistical preparations for the elections.
Tonin says that local elections are the most demanding ones, technically as well, moreover, the elections are extremely important for the development of Slovenia. "Local self-management, municipalities are the ones eliminating regional differences in Slovenia in the most intensive and most effective way," he emphasized. He also added that Election Commision of Municipality will carry out the local elections with the help of the State Election Commission, which already prepared and issued forms supporting potential candidates for local councils and mayors. The forms can already be filled out, however, we can verify them at the administrative unit after September 3.
Potential National Assembly elections a month before the local elections
This autumn, we might face early National Assembly elections as well. "With the help of the State Election Commission, we checked all potential dates, in case Slovenia does not get the new Prime Minister in the first, the second or in the third round. This means the dissolution of the parliament in the second third of August. According to all regulations, early elections have to be carried out in 60 days, which means the elections would take place in the second third of October. About a month before the local elections, then," explained Tonin and added, that the National Assembly elections may be combined with the local elections. Tonin says that he cannot say how likely is to have another elections, because several procedures are still ongoing and the chances of potential National Assembly elections depend on the upcoming days.
