If the season is good, the saffron paints the pastures with thousands of blooms. But the fickle April weather is preventing the flowers from blooming this year.

In the past years crowds of people flocked to Velika planina to see the saffron fields, but this year the fickle weather is hindering their growth. Patches of snow stayed at the plateau until
relatively late into the spring, and the temperatures were fairly low. In some parts the saffron is now in full bloom, but in others the blooming is poor. The recent snowfall surprised the saffron
when spear-shaped buds have already sprouted. Now that the snow is gone, quite a lot of saffron blooms can be admired, but this is less than a tenth of what the past years had to offer.
