“In the past decades, the most popular flower to give away was the carnation,” Bogataj explains. "Women carrying those flowers used to walk around Ljubljana and sometimes, would wave them." He explained that the carnation is the stereotypical Slovenian flower. He also pointed out that, in the past, it wasn’t as easy to get flowers as it is today, when they are artificially grown and imported. In the past, people had to count on whatever flowers were blooming and available at the flower shop.
