The auction was going to take place on March 23. According to daily Delo, the auction preview was scheduled for March 16th. The starting bid for the painting seemed rather low, so MMC turned to FURS for answers.
“We’re still gathering information, which is why we’ve cancelled the auction and took down the website. We’re sorry for the inconvenience. As soon as we sort things out, we’ll restart the auction and relist the painting on our website,” said FURSspokesperson Stojan Glavač. The Financial Administration admitted that the whole thing is a bit strange, which is why they decided to look into all the circumstances relating to the auction. Glavač also stressed that no harm had been done, as the auction was scheduled for late March.
The painting, entitled “Mythological Composition”, was created by Dalí in 1982. It measures 91 by 74 centimetres.
Before the auction begins, all bidders must pay (the equivalent of) a 10 percent deposit, with a minimum of 40 euros. According to FURS, in-house experts as well as an independent appraiser are now looking into the circumstances surrounding the auction.
