Defence Minister Andreja Katič, said it was clear that mistakes were made by the general staff, after Slovenia's elite brigade failed to pass a combat readiness test. The results of the army drill at Poček were a big disappointment, says Uroš Krek, Pahor's defence advisor. He says there were a number of mistakes at both the tactical, operational and strategic levels. Uroš Svete, from Faculty of Social Sciences adds that the problem has been lingering for years, ever since the army lost its political power.
The new Chief of General Staff, Major General Alan Geder, said on Monday that he would strive to restore the army's good reputation and secure additional funding. "I am convinced, that the adoption of these proposals would mean a return to the path of recovery for the Slovenian Army, but that won't happen overnight," said Geder and added: "I have a deep conviction of success, if we in the army work hard, honestly and ethically, and if we have the political support," he said.
The General Staff confirmed to daily Večer, that Geder will soon call on the army reserves until the army ranks are filled according to a staffing plan. The extent of the call on the reserves will be known next week. The situation in the Slovenian Army, which is at a turning point, will also be discussed by the National Assembly at an extraordinary session. The assembly will also debate the army drill at Poček, the army’s inadequate funding, and the lack of army staff.
