Cerar wrote on his Twitter account, "The candidate has 40 years of experience in the banking, insurance and oil industry". The now-retired Koprivec has a Master's degree in Business Administration. He has previously worked as an executive director at NLB, and became a member of the supervisory board of NKBM in 2013. He has also served as the CEO of insurer Adriatic and fuel company OMV Istrabenz.

If appointed, Koprivec would succeed Jožef Petrovič, who resigned from the post after one month in charge. Petrovič had to step down after the competition watchdog accused three companies – DZS, Mladinska knjiga and Extra Lux – of fixing the prices of office supplies they sold to the government. Petrovič, who worked for DZS at the time, denied the allegations but nonetheless resigned.
