In the 90s, he helped the architect Vojteh Ravnikar design the new City Gallery of Nova Gorica. He also helped to run several galleries in the coastal region and helped to renovate Kromberk Castle.
A professor of art history and sociology by trade, Brecelj started working as a curator at the Goriška regional museum in 1984. He first worked at the department of documentation, but in 1985 he was named the head of the Goriška region galleries, which were founded in 1984: the Meblo Gallery in Nova Gorica, the Riko Debenjak Gallery in Kanal, and the Solkan Primary School Gallery. He also helped to design the new City Gallery of Nova Gorica, which was opened in 1997 with an exhibition by the Slovenian painter Silvester Komel.
Brecelj organized a total of 163 exhibitions for galleries in the Goriška region, and he also worked for the Department of Art and Cultural History at the Goriška regional museum. He started out by organizing retrospective exhibitions at Kromberk Castle. Between 1994 and 2006, he installed four major retrospective exhibitions by important artists (Pavel Medvešček, Miloš Volarič, Rudi Pergar, Rafael Podobnik) as well as several smaller exhibitions.
