On Monday, the 25th of June, Slovenia marked Statehood Day. On that day 27 years ago, and following the independence referendum, the then Speaker of Parliament, France Bučar, declared the new state. The political opponents and those with different opinions at that time were not considered enemies.
A number of ceremonies marked this year’s Statehood Day. President Borut Pahor, as the key note speaker at the official state ceremony, stressed that "when celebrating such a holiday, it is nice and right to let our feelings overwhelm us. More than we do on normal days, at least once a year we can say out loud that we’re happy to have our Slovenia." On Monday, President Pahor hosted an open doors day at the Presidential Palace. He also welcomed the Slovenian men’s basketball team, decorating it with the Golden Order of Merit for becoming European champions at the Eurobasket in Turkey.

On Statehood Day, PM Miro Cerar said it was worth reassessing the position in which we the people, our society, and country is in, and recognizing the positive.

An event marking Statehood Day was also held in Vienna. The Slovenian Ambassador to Vienna, Ksenija Škrilec, said the refugee crisis was strongly influencing relations within the EU, and also between Slovenia and Austria. But despite that, she said she remained an optimist.
